IEU President Terry Huddy on how to help your Rep during a bargaining campaign

IEU President Terry Huddy.

Enterprise Bargaining campaigns can be a crucial turning point for independent school staff. Whether the issue is workload, pay, class sizes or job security, these campaigns only succeed when members are engaged, informed, and united.

While your union Rep plays a key role in coordinating efforts and liaising with leadership, they can’t do it alone. Here’s how you can help them make a real difference.

1. Complete surveys promptly

The bargaining process usually begins with a staff survey. This is your chance to share what matters most to you. Filling it in thoughtfully and on time helps your Rep and Organiser identify the key priorities across the school.

2. Attend information sessions and debriefs

When the results come in, your Rep will likely hold a meeting to discuss the common themes. This is a vital opportunity to ask questions, propose solutions, and build consensus. These meetings help us ensure that the Log of Claims that follows reflects the real concerns and aspirations of our membership.

3. Volunteer for the EBA committee

If you’re passionate about workplace conditions and want to be part of the solution, consider joining the EBA Committee. This group supports the Rep, helps shape strategy, and may even participate directly in negotiations. The IEU offers excellent training and guidance to help new committee members feel confident and prepared – no prior experience necessary.

4. Stay engaged and spread the word

During a campaign, there will be key updates, actions, and sometimes challenges. By checking your emails, attending briefings, and sharing information with colleagues, you can help build momentum and ensure everyone feels included and informed. Your voice – both in and out of meetings – makes a real difference.

5. Show solidarity

Even small acts of support matter: wearing a badge, showing up for a collective photo, or simply asking your Rep how things are going. These gestures remind us that we’re in this together.

Your union Rep is just one person – but with your backing, they represent the strength of many. Together, we can achieve better outcomes for all.
