IEU helps improve complaints process at Catholic Education Tasmania

The IEU has been working with CET to ensure staff can report concerns anonymously in situations involving power imbalances or personal risk.

The union identified a critical need for better protections for employees wishing to report issues such as bullying, harassment, sexual harassment, or concerns involving a direct line manager or school leader.

As a result of IEU-initiated discussions, CET has updated its online complaints form to allow for anonymous submissions. Staff can now simply write ‘anonymous’ in the name field if they prefer not to identify themselves.

A safe, accessible reporting system is essential to drive cultural change and improve workplace safety. While reporting can feel daunting, it’s the only way issues can be addressed – so it’s vital that the process encourages and protects those who speak up.

Strengthening this process also means CET can better identify recurring issues and respond more effectively when patterns of concern emerge. When making a complaint, the more detail that can be provided – such as names, dates, and witnesses – the more helpful it is.

Importantly, staff who report concerns are legally protected from adverse action. The IEU can assist members with the complaints process and is also able to raise concerns on behalf of members who wish to remain anonymous.

CET has agreed to receive such reports via the union, demonstrating how positive collaboration can lead to improved outcomes for both staff and school communities.
