Statement on Israel and Palestine

The IEU is proud to represent members from an exceptionally broad range of backgrounds. Solidarity in diversity is our strength.

IEU members are shocked by the violence and loss of life in Israel and Gaza. Together, we stand in solidarity with the many hundreds of IEU members affected by what is currently occurring. We know some members have already lost loved ones, and many more are living in fear for family and friends in the region.

The IEU condemns violence in all forms and is horrified by the indiscriminate taking of civilian lives.

We condemn the violence perpetrated by Hamas on innocent Israeli civilians in the attacks of 7 October. All Israeli hostages must be released, and Hamas must be held accountable for these atrocities.

In response to this action by a terrorist group, the Israeli government has launched a large-scale military campaign against Gaza and has cut off desperately needed supplies for over 2 million people, including water, food, electricity and medical supplies. We are now horrified to witness an unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in a population almost half of which is under 18 years of age.

As educators, we have particular concern for the wellbeing of children. We are appalled by the death and injury already caused to thousands of children, both Israeli and Palestinian and we call for the urgent resumption of adequate food, water, aid, medicine, and power into Gaza, the withdrawal of which amounts to a form of collective punishment.

We support the call by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) and the International Trade Union Confederation for all sides, and the international community, to act for a just peace. There must be an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire, and the creation of humanitarian corridors to allow aid into Palestine unimpeded. Civilians must be protected, and civilian infrastructure such as hospitals must not be targeted.

We join with the ACTU in recognising that this latest escalation is part of a decades-long conflict that must be brought to a just end, which can only be achieved through dialogue and respect for international law and human rights in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

We also call for restraint in our own communities. We support the democratic right of everyone in Australia to raise their voice, express their opinions, and call for change – but it is imperative that this is done in a way which does not threaten, intimidate, or belittle others. The IEU is committed to anti racist practices. We oppose all forms of prejudice and we must continue to work collectively to ensure that everyone feels safe and supported in these extraordinarily difficult times.

Should any IEU member need support or assistance we encourage them to contact us.
