Rep profile: Katrine Andersen, North-Eastern Montessori School, St Helena

What attracted you to working in education?

After finishing my Bachelor of Biological Sciences degree, I worked in a small zoo overseas developing their education program. This is where I first discovered my love of teaching.

What excites you about your job?

The strong bonds I form with my students are what really drives me. I work as a Montessori teacher and therefore I have the same students for three years, allowing me to develop strong relationships with each one.

What is the biggest job for you as Rep at your school?

Ensuring we have open, honest and respectful communication between the leadership team and staff. Being an active listener and guiding my colleagues
in how to deal with their issues and stresses.

What is the most rewarding aspect of being an IEU Rep?

I am looking forward to being part of the EBA negotiations next year. This is where we have a chance to advocate for our colleagues and improve working conditions.

What do you say to people curious about the union?

The bigger the union presence we have in the workplace, the stronger we are as employees. Explore the website and attend sub-branch meetings to get a better understanding of what the union offers.
