Stronger together: New support sessions for IEU Health and Safety Reps

Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) play a vital role in our schools, and the IEU is committed to ensuring every workplace has a well-trained, confident HSR equipped to advocate for staff wellbeing.

HSRs represent an entire Designated Work Group – often without the same support structures as IEU Reps. Navigating conversations with management, peers, and others who may not fully understand health and safety legislation – especially around emerging risks like psychosocial hazards – can be challenging.

Gaining recognition for these risks and securing meaningful action is often an uphill battle. After completing the IEU’s comprehensive five-day OHS training, many HSRs walk away not just with essential knowledge, but with a strong bond formed with their fellow trainees, helping to build solidarity and reduce feelings of isolation in their crucial roles.

To build on that foundation and maintain connection, the IEU has launched regular 90-minute catchups for trained HSRs. These events are free for IEU members. They are designed to keep HSRs up to date on the latest developments in health and safety, and to give them a chance to share real-world experiences and advice.

The first session, held in late May, included a briefing on current OHS issues, a case study discussion, and an open Q&A forum. The union is refining the format based on participant feedback, ensuring each session is practical, relevant, and engaging.

We’re also calling on school leaders to release HSRs to attend these vital events – they are, after all, about keeping schools safe for everyone, and the OHS Act places an obligation on employers to provide HSRs with paid time to perform their role.

Like all IEU training, these events thrive on the energy and insight of our members. They’re not just top-down updates – they’re peer-powered forums.

HSRs perform a demanding yet often under-appreciated role – they deserve all the support we can provide. To register for the next HSR catch-up, email an expression of interest to: ohs@ieuvictas.org.au
