Kardinia International College win big with new Enterprise Agreement
The IEU and its members at Kardinia International College have finally reached in-principle Agreement after a determined campaign that saw staff Vote No earlier in the year to an Agreement proposed by the employer that failed to include key demands of staff.
In early bargaining (before the initial vote), IEU negotiators achieved:
Definition of an employee’s right to fair, reasonable and equitable workloads now extends the statement to include ALL staff
Increased accident make-up pay to 39 weeks in accordance with legislation changes to the Educational Services (Teachers) Award
Improvements made to limit employment for a specified period of time (Fixed term contracts)
Infectious diseases leave expanded to include Covid-19
Broader definition of immediate family in accordance with the Fair Work Act for personal leave
Access to five days discretionary leave
Improved redundancy provisions
Paid parental leave increased to 16 weeks for primary carer
Paid partner leave increased to 4 weeks (non-primary carer)
Superannuation to be paid on 52 weeks of parental leave
20 days paid leave for person affected by domestic violence
Camp allowance increased to $120 per night
Withholding of money for notice not given in line with Award
Automatic progression for all teaching staff regardless of full time equivalent
Reduction of workload for graduate teachers in first year of teaching
Extras to be included in face-to-face teaching.
However, there were still too many claims that had not been satisfactorily settled, and staff voted against the employer’s draft Agreement.
On our return to the bargaining table, we achieved further wins including:
Salary increases and adjustments:
Total salary increases of 15% over the three-year Agreement.
Paid special maternity leave:
Inclusion of provisions for paid special maternity leave, supporting staff during significant and sensitive life events.
Flexible work arrangements:
Inclusion of a clause relating to flexible work arrangements including possibility of job share.
Workplace delegates' rights:
Inclusion of a clause relating to workplace delegates’ rights, strengthening and protecting IEU representatives in their role in advocating for staff.
Staff Consultative Committee clause:
Introduction of a clause to establish a workplace Consultative Committee providing a mechanism for staff views to be taken into account in college decision making.
Commitment to part-time teachers:
A commitment from the Employer to make every reasonable effort to limit the spread of hours for part-time teachers where practicable.
Reduced limits
Removal of periods from existing limits which are now reflected in hours of face-to-face teaching per week (Primary 20.83 hours, Secondary 18.5 hours).
