Training builds strength across the IEU

Training is a cornerstone of the critical Victorian Catholic schools campaign. Nothing is more important for building bargaining strength than bringing key unionists together to learn and share knowledge. As an education union, this is central to the work.

The IEU encouraged Catholic sector Reps attending the recent benchmark event at Trades Hall, and at similar sessions across the state this term, to make use of new Delegate Rights laws, which provide paid training for elected union representatives.

Participants left these sessions galvanised and better prepared to navigate the challenges ahead in the campaign for improved pay and conditions in the sector.

On 5 and 6 March, Reps from across Tasmania attended training, including a full-day program on handling workplace grievances and resolving conflict, followed by a special Council meeting to endorse the IEU Log of Claims for the next Tasmanian Catholic Agreement.

Using case studies and practical, step-by-step problem-solving, participants in the workplace grievance program built their skills in supporting members, communicating clearly, and handling issues fairly in complex situations.

By the end of the day, Reps had identified ways to build union strength in their workplaces, understood how individual concerns can lead to collective action, and gained a clearer understanding of natural justice and fair process.

Member training

While Rep training is vital, the union also offers a broad program for all IEU members to build professional and workplace skills.

The categories on the IEU website training page reflect this breadth, covering everything from bargaining to retirement, with options available across all regions.

Upcoming highlights include Supporting Students with Dyscalculia, Explicit Instruction, a Health and Safety Representative refresher on work-related stress, and Better Bargaining, a focused exploration of enterprise bargaining.

Members can view all new programs on the website. To book into a course, log in to Member Access using your member number and password.
